In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20 year drought has led to a government-endorsed ban on private toilets. Citizens are forced to use public loos, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for the basic need to wee! But what happens when one person decides enough is enough...

The hilariously funny and touchingly honest award-winning musical Urinetown premieres in South Africa at the Artscape Arena, Cape Town from 4 to 14 July 2018 - thankfully not before Cape Town's very own Day Zero! Inspired by the work of Bertol Brecht and Kurt Weil, Urinetown is an irreverent satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny.

Directed by Paul Griffiths with Musical direction by Garth Tavares and choreography by Genna Galloway. The production has a cast of 33. Paul Griffiths says; ‘Urinetown - the musical presents a dystopian society trying to survive a shortage of our most precious resource - WATER. The relevance of which speaks for itself’.

Delia Sainsbury founder of the Waterfront Theatre School adds that: ‘This production is proving to be one of the most exciting projects undertaken by WTS.

Costumes for this particular production are influenced by the Steam Punk aesthetic; a style that started out as a science-fiction sub-genre in the 1970’s but is a full-blown youth sub- culture today. Steampunk fashion combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction.

The team who engineered last year's smash hit Sister Act the Musical are back with a vengeance to explore what happens when water is worth more than its weight in gold! Performances are at 8pm each night from Wednesday 4 July to Saturday 14th July. There are two matinees at 3.30pm on Saturday 7 and 14 July.

Tickets are R150 each and may be booked through Artscape Dial-Seat 021 421 7695, Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers outlets, call Computicket 0861 915 8000 or online www.computicket.com. Seating is unreserved. Duration two hours with an interval and suitable for all ages.

Urinetown is written by Greg Kotis, music by Mark Hollman and together they wrote the lyrics for their journey to Broadway in 2001.
