Spotlight: Theatre Family Fun this Holiday

It is summer in the city and you are probably keeping your eyes peeled for lamp posters that say when and where kids theatre events are happening so that you can plan your family outings? In the mood for a night out, but what about the kids? Take them along and go see a musical! Everyone’s favourite red haired kidlet and her beloved dog Sandy is onstage at the Artscape Opera House from 2 December until 8 January, in the Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman presented Annie! The world’s favourite family musical, with show tune hits like “It’s a Hard Knock Life”, “Easy Street” and that ray of sunshine “Tomorrow” will leave the whole family smiling for days. Elves

The Lilliput Children`s Theatre Company will be performing one of their most popular shows, The Elves and The Shoemaker at the Nassau Theatre, from 12 – 17 December. This magical fairy-tale takes place in Cape Town were a Shoemaker lives with his wife. Very poor and worried that they will not be able to sell any shoes, two young elves come to their aid with beautiful shoes and a birthday party too! The lovely Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are in town too, with morning shows at the Artscape Theatre. So go be enchanted as you adventure with Snow and the Dwarfs, find Prince Charming and defeat the Wicked Queen. It seems to be a festive season of princesses, as Cinderella is also in town at the Baxter Theatre. This much loved fairy tale is getting a pantomime make-over with loads of audience participation and popular songs from Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and Roxette. The Eoan Group School of Performing Arts brings yet another fairy-tale twist with their end-of-year dance drama production, Cinderella #vannie Flats. They mix things up a bit to present an an old fashioned happily ever after ending with a ton of laugh-out-loud scenes in between at the Joseph Stone Auditorium from 9 to 11 December. Feeling like some some festive carolling? Then the Little Maestros presented Classic Carols with flute, cello, percussion, and piano may be just the thing for you and your toddler. You can have some sing-along fun with your youngsters at Youngblood (70-72 Bree Street) on Saturday morning, 3 December, or you can join them at Hugo Lambrechts on Tuesday afternoon, 6 December. Also, don't forget, you only have one more opportunity on Saturday morning, 3 December, to join husband and wife team Rob van Vuuren and Danielle Bischoff as Florence and Watson, the funniest, all-singing, all-dancing, all-storytelling Honey Badgers. They are ready to share their remarkable tale of a brave and resourceful little mouse who discovers a unique talent that allows her to save the Proteas on the beautiful mountain that she calls home at the delightful Kalk Bay Theatre. The Jungle Theatre Company is also ready to amaze audiences of all ages at the Masque Theatre from 8 to 15 December with the ancient Khoikhoi folktale When Lion Had Wings. Told by three very different characters in English, Afrikaans and Nama, the story tellers continuously link the folktale to the language, the culture and the history of the Khoikhoi, as insights into the behaviour of humans and wild animals are revealed. Perhaps you are in the mood to take the kidlets to see a show with a strong green message? Then The Recycling Adventures of Reece is what you are looking for. You can meet Reece at The Shed (Stellenbosch) on 9 to 10 December, and share in a fun filled adventure that has many moments of laughter, but also offers a meaningful experience for every child and adult who watches it. Tickets at R60 per adult and R40 per child can be booked via Quicket.

If you and your youngsters are maybe rather in the mood for some ballet, then Peter Pan and Tinkerbel at the Artscape Theatre will be your first choice. From 16 December to 8 January you can see these much loved characters from the pen of novelist JM Barrie dance through Neverland and straight into your heart as they interact with mermaids, pirates, and occasionally ordinary children from the outside world too. And just to make sure you are ready for all things festive season, go check out the exuberant, exhilarating musical, You’re a good man Charlie Brown at the Milnerton Playhouse, running until 10 December. The perfect show for that end of year bash or a family holiday outing. It promises to charm audiences young and old as it brings to stage one of the world's favourite cartoon characters.
