Jazzart celebrates our youth, their achievements and their contribution to the creative economy with the production InMotion; a vibrant, energetic production with performances choreographed by Sifiso Kweyama (Jazzart Artistic Director), Mziyanda Mancam (Jazzart’s Resident Teacher) and Tracey September and Adam Malebo (Jazzart Alumni who joined Jazzart this year as Outreach Teachers and Dancers).

Each piece portrays the choreographer’s understanding of the challenges our youth face today and offers dance as a medium to tell their stories. The pulsating energy on stage reflects the dancer’s passion and hunger to heal and excel in dance; to rise above their current circumstances…whatever that may be.

INFINITE REFLECTIONS Choreographed by Sifiso Kweyama

Infinite Reflections looks at the contrasting reflection of our youth’s emotional suffering and joy. The pain of our youth varies for each because of their different upbringing and demographics. However, their feelings of happiness and unhappiness are the same.

The stories portrayed are not fictional but the reality of who they are and a reflection of what they are. As dancers travel this journey of story-telling, they stimulate the audience to gather his or her thoughts of their own emotional and physical experiences.

MENDING Choreographed by Mziyanda Mancam

When you think of the issues our youth faced in the past and consider the challenges they now face, what do you see?

Mending explores and celebrates our youth’s journey of finding happiness while battling with life’s challenges. It uses gestures and movements as a common thread to translate their journey of acceptance and understanding of our differences as the Rainbow Nation. Their struggle is to ultimately mend what is broken and honour those who were and those who now are.

LET GO Choreographed by Adam Malebo

Let Go reflects how we stifle our own growth by holding on to something or someone that is not good for us. Too many of us miss out on wonderful opportunities that are waiting for us to experience because we will not let go of the past. When we are in struggle, we are out of the flow of the universal good. As we battle against the flow of life we exhaust ourselves and as a consequence, we have nothing to show for our efforts.

When we surrender and let go, we stop swimming against the current. Life picks us up and supports us to move in a new direction.

CROOKED BUT UPRIGHT Choreographed by Tracey September

Crooked but Upright embraces our crooked experiences as learning experiences. Usually we let our crookedness scare or act as a detour from our route to success. Our fears, which are mostly internal, distract us from our truth and new life.

The work is about standing upright and educating ourselves to become better. When we understand our flaws and understand what has made us crooked, emotionally or physically, we can heal and put our future in motion.
