Casting Notifce - Salt (Recasting)

We are looking to recast a role in Salt, a new play that has already received awards and accolades in its first year of running. We want a professional actor who can fit into our friendly and committed team and be prepared to be part of the Salt family on and off through out the 2015 year.

Intermingling physical performance and thrilling drama, Salt was considered ‘one of the gems on this year’s Fringe’ (Ismail Mahomed, Artistic Director, NAF 2014),‘a haunting journey’ (David Fick, Broadway World) and‘…stands out as something special’ as well as being ‘…nothing short of brilliant.’, (Cue Newspaper 2014). Winner of a Standard Bank Ovation Award and the PANSA New Writer Award, Salt is an exciting new production that is fast gaining recognition as a stand out piece on South African theatre circuit. An exploration of into mental health, truth and belief, Salt follows Aya, a long time patient in a psychiatric hospital who one day encounters a new doctor who believes he can cure her. He helps to drag her out of her drug-induced amnesia, delusional memories of her brother and confused imaginings with enlightening yet dire consequences. Salt is the creation of Wynne Bredenkamp, graduate with distinction in Theatre Making from UCT’s BA in Theatre and Performance. Co-awarded the Most Promising Student Writer award at the 2013 National Arts Festival, Salt is her first professional production which premiered at the 2014 National Arts Festival and won a Standard Bank Ovation Award with Wynne herself awarded a PANSA New Writers Award. Bringing the script to life is a dynamic cast of young professional actors who have all graduated from the UCT Theatre and Performance BA. They are are sure to and have already made an unforgettable impression on audiences.

The role:

This role is one of three within the play. It is not the ‘main’ character but is an integral and constant presence through out the play. The personality of the character is not set. Rather, it is the personality of the actor that affects how the role will be shaped.

Raiyu is the protective brother of Aya. They have lived together in isolation on an island since early childhood and treats any outside influence as a threat. Strong in will and strength, he is a constant presence in her dreams and reality.

We want:

• A coloured or black male of an age between 21 and late 20s.

• At least 2 years theatre performance experience (including that spent in tertiary institutions)

• Bilingual – Afrikaans and English (both of equal strength)

• A background in movement and/or physical performance – the play requires movement sequences and partner work.

• A strong presence and strong physique

• Able to work as part of a team

Rehearsals:

• End of January – 24th February 2015

• Confirmed Runs:

• 24th Feb – end of March 2015

• Participation in the National Arts Festival 2015

• Future Plans:

• Afrikaans run in Stellenbosch – theatre

• English run in Johannesburg – theatres, schools and festivals

• English run in Durban – schools, festivals

Payment:

We are self producing young theatre-makers. This means that we cannot afford to pay actors upfront and a set amount. This doesn’t mean that this is ‘starve for your art’. We work on profit share system – all income of ticket sales, minus expenses, are shared equally amongst the team. Runs planned for next year are lucrative and are being planned to bring in the maximum income for time spent.
