Abstr(ACT) Productions’ brand new flagship production, Smaarties, is finally hitting the Cape Town stage with full force! After a hugely successful run at the South African State Theatre earlier on in the year, Smaarties has been invited to perform at various other theatres in South Africa. These included theatres in Pretoria, Centurion, Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Potchefstroom and Stellenbosch. Now finally Cape Town audiences will be able to see this tour-de-force at the Alexander Bar Upstairs Theatre from 17 – 29 November 2014. It is directed and designed one of Mail&Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans 2014, Quintin Wils, who says that Smaarties is by far the most complex show that he has ever directed, but adds that “…it is by far the most exciting production that I have directed thus far! A production that makes you think twice about what schizophrenia actually is.” Smaarties, written and performed by Jannes Erasmus, is a powerful one-man show about Mr Lotz who finds himself in a psychiatric ward after the death of both of his parents. He still has a 12-year-old sister he has to look after. The play looks at his daily life in the ward and how he is coping and trying to word and explain what really happened that night to him and his parents…

“…It is excellent theatre, a real treat!” Hurter, (Artslink.co.za).

“…Smaarties can compete with some of the best one-man shows in the country!” Breytenbach, (Die Reviewer).

“…Eramus’ acting is outstanding!” Kusel, (Grapevine).

Smaarties is showing at the Alexander Bar & Upstairs Theatre in Cape Town (76 Strand Street (corner of Strand and Loop)) from Monday 17 November – Wednesday 19 November at 21h00, and Monday 24 Novemer – Saturday 29 November at 21h00. Tickets are only R90 (or R80 online) and available at www.alexanderbar.co.za . For inquiries please call 021 300 1652.
